Find the Blue House at the End of the Gravel Road

We're at 35130 Highway 550, about 15 minutes north of Durango. The highway below us, U.S. 160, was once the Old Spanish Trail; U.S. 550 above Durango follows the old Silverton Railroad grade and is known today as the San Juan Skyway, or the "Million Dollar Highway."

From Durango

Head north on Highway 550 about 12 miles, between mile markers 34 and 35. At the blue-and-white Colorado Timberline Academy sign, exit right at the row of ten mailboxes onto Academy Drive (GPS may call it Animas Springs Road). Follow the signs to the blue house at the end of the gravel road.

From Ouray or Silverton

Head south on Highway 550, about 12 miles south of the Purgatory entrance. Watch for the row of mailboxes and exit left onto Academy Drive just before you reach them, then follow the signs down to the blue house.
